Nomination of Candidates
Municipality of the Town of Isle aux Morts


Nominations of candidates for By-Election to the Council for the Municipality of Isle aux Morts will be received between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on JUNE 2ND, 2015 at the Town Hall.



Nominations shall be in writing and state the name and civic address of the candidate and shall be signed by the Proposer and Seconder both of whom shall be present together with the candidate who shall sign also signifying his or her acceptance. In the event that a candidate cannot be present for his/her nomination, his/her proposer and seconder can complete the required form.


Every candidate for Election to the Council shall at the time of his or her nomination, deposit with the Returning Officer the non-refundable sum of ten dollars ($10.00).


The qualifications of a candidate for Election to Council are as follows:
(1) Canadian Citizen of the full age of eighteen years.
(2) Resident of the municipality for at least 30 days immediately prior to the date set for the nomination period.
(3) Not indebted to the Council for any arrears of taxes or other charges.
(4) Not otherwise disqualified under The Municipal Elections Act,

Water Thaw Up

Residents are advised that effective immediately, council has adopted a new policy for water thaw up.


There will be a $25.00 fee per person/per hour charged to anyone needing the town's assistance in clearing frozen water lines.


There will be a $25.00 fee per day for rental of water tanked used in thawing frozen water lines.

NOTICE
Mackenzie's Ambulance service requested the town's help in notifying all residents of the importance of knowing their street address and having it readily available to pass to the paramedics in case of an emergency. Many of the drivers are not familiar with the area and knowing the street address is essential in getting the paramedics to you home as soon as possible.
If you are unsure of your street address please contact me at the town office and I can give it to you.

The Harvey Family Legend
Newfoundland DogIn 1828, the Harvey family, with the aid of their Newfoundland dog, "Hairyman", rescued 163 people from the sinking brig "Despatch", shipwrecked on the rocks off Isle Aux Morts. They made another daring rescue in 1838, saving 25 crew members from the Glasgow ship, the "Rankin". The present day Coast Guard Ship "Ann Harvey", is named in memory of the daughter of George Harvey who, while she was only 17 years old, assisted in these heroic deeds. [Read more]

Isle Aux Morts has a rich maritime heritage of fishing and sailing with many tales of shipwrecks. For this reason the French named it "Deadman's Island".
